Repaying & budgeting

Equal instalments vs equal principal, when early settlement saves most, what happens after a missed payment, and budgeting for big costs.

What you'll learn

How you repay can matter as much as the rate. These guides compare equal instalments with equal principal, show how much early settlement and partial prepayment save depending on when you pay, and explain when combining several debts into one loan helps and when it doesn't.

They also cover the harder moments: what actually happens after a missed instalment, how to catch up and what to tell your adviser, and how to plan a big cost like a renovation so you borrow only the gap your savings can't cover.

Missed a loan repayment? What happens next and what to do

Life doesn't always go to plan, and sometimes an instalment slips. This guide explains what actually happens when you miss a loan repayment in Malaysia, from late payment interest to how arrears can show up in your credit record, with a worked RM example and a catch-up plan. It covers what to say to your adviser, how to pay safely and keep proof, what to do if you can't catch up, and what you should never do, like turning to an Ah Long to cover the gap.

Planning a renovation budget: how much to save, how much to borrow

A renovation usually costs more than the first quotation. This guide shows how to build a budget from itemised quotations, add a contingency buffer, decide how much to pay from savings and how much to borrow, compare funding options, check and pay contractors in stages, choose a loan term, and use any unspent buffer well, with worked RM 30,000 examples.

Can I settle early, and how much will I pay?

Yes, at any time, with no early settlement penalty or fee. You pay the outstanding principal plus interest only up to the day you settle. For example, on RM 10,000 over 12 months at 4.9% p.a., settling right after the 6th instalment means paying RM 5,061.10 and saves RM 72.58 of interest. Settling between due dates adds interest for the days since your last due date (about RM 6.89 if you settled that loan 10 days later), so the amount changes from day to day. Message your adviser for the exact figure on the day you plan to pay. You can estimate it with the Early settlement calculator under Calculators.

Can I pay extra without settling in full?

Yes, with a partial prepayment of at least RM 1,000 and no penalty. It reduces your outstanding principal, and your remaining instalments are recalculated over the same number of months, so your monthly instalment goes down and your end date stays the same. If you prepay between due dates, you also pay interest on the prepaid amount only, for the days since your last due date. For example, on RM 10,000 over 12 months at 4.9% p.a., prepaying RM 3,000 right after the 6th instalment lowers the instalment from RM 855.62 to RM 348.44 and saves RM 43.02 of interest. Ask your adviser for the exact amount before you pay, and for an updated statement of account afterwards.

What happens if I miss a repayment?

Late payment interest applies as set out in your loan agreement. Under the Moneylenders Act 1951 it is capped at 8% a year simple interest, calculated daily, on the overdue instalment only. Late payment can also make future borrowing harder, so ask your adviser before you sign whether our licensed lending partner reports repayments to any credit reporting agency. Your adviser reminds you on WhatsApp before each due date. If you've missed a payment, pay what you can as soon as you can and message your adviser. Our blog post 'Missed a loan repayment? What happens next and what to do' explains the steps.
